Eight checks catch nearly every real compatibility mistake first-time builders make — starting with the one that has no workaround: CPU socket matching motherboard socket. Work through this list before buying anything, not after parts arrive.

- CPU socket matches motherboard socket. The CPU's socket type (e.g. AM5, LGA1700) must exactly match the motherboard's socket — this is the single most fundamental compatibility check and there is no adapter that fixes a mismatch.
- RAM type matches motherboard (DDR4 vs DDR5). Motherboards support only one RAM generation — check the board's spec sheet, not just the CPU generation, since some CPU generations bridge both DDR4 and DDR5 boards.
- GPU length fits case clearance. Compare your specific GPU's listed length (including factory-overclocked triple-fan variants, which often run longer than reference cards) against the case's maximum GPU length spec.
- CPU cooler height fits case clearance. Tall air-tower coolers have a listed height that must fit under the case's maximum CPU cooler height spec — AIOs sidestep this but need radiator mount clearance instead.
- PSU has the GPU's required connectors. Check both the total wattage AND the specific connector count/type (8-pin PCIe vs 12VHPWR/12V-2x6) your GPU requires — both must be satisfied, not just the wattage number.
- Motherboard form factor fits the case. ATX, Micro-ATX, and Mini-ITX boards each need a case rated for that form factor (larger form factors also fit in bigger cases, but not the reverse).
- M.2 slot generation matches your SSD's intended speed. Not every M.2 slot on a board runs at the same PCIe generation — check the board's manual for which slot is wired to the CPU (usually fastest) versus the chipset.
- Case has enough drive/fan mounts for your plan. Confirm the case lists enough 2.5"/3.5" bays for your storage plan and enough fan mounts for your intended intake/exhaust fan count before buying additional fans.
